Rome Woman Killed In Head On Collision

The State Patrol has confirmed that a Rome woman died in a head on collision on State Highway 48 just west of Summerville Friday evening.

According to State Patrol Communications Officer Joseph Swords, 62 year old Sue Ellenburg Hight of Saddle Trail in Rome was killed instantly after an on coming vehicle crossed the center line and struck her head on.

Hight was driving her 1999 Chevy Tahoe Eastbound on Highway 48 traveling back to Rome from visiting her daughter in Nashville Tennessee when the accident occurred. She was struck by 37 year old Penny Latrice Ammons who was traveling Westbound in her 2000 Chevy Blazer.

Ammons was airlifted from the scene by a Lifeforce Helicopter and was taken to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where she is listed in critical condition.

The GSP’s Specialized accident reconstruction team is investigating the accident and charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
