Crescent Ave. Neighborhood in High Water

As off and on rain has plagued Rome over the past few days, it has led to much flooding, though the small Crescent Ave. neighborhood in South Rome maybe in the worst position in the county.

Crescent Ave. is a dead-end street with several branch streets off of Cave Spring St. The neighborhood is bound by Silver Creek and railroad tracks, but the creek is what residents are worried about. The only access to the neighborhood by car is a small, old, and dilapidated bridge.

Though a partial levee protects the homes, it is usually not enough as waters creep around the edge. The levee, built in the 70’s, was built where the end did not connect to higher ground, allowing any flood waters to flow around and into the lower part of the neighborhood. The neighborhood has had a history of severe flooding in the past, and it appears history may repeat itself.

Residents were left moving everything from lawnmowers to campers to higher ground as the water loomed in the distance. People had also marked the water’s edge with several sticks, showing the water rise and recede every once in a while.

At 7:00 PM, the water had actually receded about a foot, though the rains of this evening’s severe storms had not had time to take effect yet.

While the people of the area were able to breath a sigh of relief Tuesday evening, a bit of uneasiness still remained, and residents would have to stand ever vigilant overnight at the murky water standing behind their homes.
