Fire Destroys North Rome Home In Early Morning Blaze

A couple of engine companies responded to a house fire at 304 Calhoun Avenue at 2:36am this morning.
The house was fully involved when the first units got to the scene. They tried to protect adjacent structures from the flames which were being whipped by an icy north wind.
Battalion Chief Steve Wilson with the Rome Fire Department said that it will be sometime later in the day before a cause for the fire is determined.
Robert Owens with the Fire marshall’s office said crews were still on the scene Monday morning sifting through the ashes looking for any sign that someone may have been inside. Owens said neighbors told firefighters a homeless man frequented the property and may have been in the home.
At this point, Owens added “we have found no indication that anyone was in the structure.”
Crews are expected to be on the scene for a while longer this morning.
