Brush Fires Plague Eastern Floyd County Saturday
By RNW Staff Writer Hayden Jennings
A series of Brush and Grass Fires left fire companies around Eastern Floyd Co. running non-stop Saturday afternoon.
The latest series of fires began with a woods fire in the 700 block of Turner Chapel Rd. The fire was reported around 4:00 PM behind a small church, prompting the response of Engine 4, Quint 3, and Car 25. Firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the fire, but not before it consumed 1-2 acres of woods and neared several outbuildings. According to Rome Fire Battalion Chief Rick Stephens, it appeared that the fire was ignited from an unattended rubbish fire on Atkins Dr., and then spread up the hill side.
At around 4:30 PM, a power outage and grass fire occurred on Chateau Dr. at Holiday Dr.
According to witnesses, a sparking power line ignited the hillside next to a new hotel at this location. The fire burnt the grass and bales of hay along the road before Engines 2 and 10 arrived and doused the blaze.
As firefighters wrapped up their operations on Chateau Dr. and Turner Chapel Rd., all of those engines along with Engine 10 and Ladder 1 converged on a reported apartment fire at Callier Forest Apartments on Dodd Blvd. According to Chief Stephens, the fire began in pinestraw in front of the office. The fire spread to the siding of the building before a plethora of firefighters arrived and extinguished it. The siding of the office was damaged, but the fire did not have time make it into the overhang and attic. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
