100_2396A landscaping truck hauling hay caught fire Tuesday afternoon, causing rush hour mayhem on US 411 near Tractor Supply.

The large Chevy Flatbed Trailer owned by BC Landscaping in Gainesville, GA pulled over ablaze on 411 at Tuckawana drive shortly after 5:00 PM. The truck was carrying rolls of hay and grass seed. As the hay quickly burned, it produced a largwe column of smoke in the area.

100_2400According to Rome Fire Battalion Chief Steve Wilson, when Quint 3 and Engine initially got the call, there were conflicting reports that it was a logging truck and that the semi cab on fire and spreading onto the bed. Quint 3 and Car 25 arrived and and were able to to gain a knockdown of the hay and began raking it off and dousing it.

The situation was complicated after a fire-hydrant ruptured at its base as angry drivers began to call 911 complaining of the backup. While the cargo was damaged, it was not yet clear if the truck sustained any damage.

US 411 Esatbound was temporarily blocked during the extinguishment, but was promptly reopened when possible.
