Floyd County Man Seriously Injured In GA 20 Accident (UPDATED)

By RomeNewswire • on March 20, 2009

A Floyd County man was seriously injured Thursday night after a one vehicle accident on Georgia Highway 20 near Mays Bridge Road.

According to Floyd County police public information officer Greg Beck, a 1997 Nissan Maxima driven by 24-year-old Matthew Weeks of a Turners Bend Road address lost control, crossed the center line and went off the roadway on the east bound side of the highway.

The vehicle side swiped a tree and continued on, striking another tree head on.

According to police, when officers arrived the vehicle was more than 500 feet off the roadway and was only visible because it was on fire.

Officers rushed to the vehicle with a fire extinguisher when they realized the driver was still inside.

The fire was extinguished and Weeks had to be extricated by Rome Fire fighters.

He was life-flighted from the scene and sent to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

An official from Erlanger said at 1:00 p.m. that Weeks was listed as being in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

My brother, Matt, is still in critical condition in the ICU, but he is doing well. He sufferes from quite a few life threatning injuries, but has made it through two surgeries. He has responded to the nurses a few times so we know he is still with us. He has more surgery up ahead so please pray for Matt. Thank you for all of the support.- Crystal
