Town Green, Budget On Agenda for Monday City Commission

By RomeNewswire • on April 5, 2009

Along with rezoning for property relating to the Etowah Terrace project and Alcohol Control Commission (ACC) recommendations for The Lantern, the Rome City Commission will also take a look at the proposed Town Green budget on Monday.

The amended total budget comes to $1,764,593.

Only $1,690,000 is available from the 2006 SPLOST (special-purpose local-option sales tax) funds for the downtown project, so the total cost is expected to run $74,593 over budget.

“We’re actually pleased that we got it that close,” said Rome Assistant City Manager Sammy Rich. “We spent $427,359 on the storm culvert that wasn’t expected.”

R.J. Griffin’s March 19 pricing came to $1,186,775. Adding in all the additional costs, commissioners are expected to approve the $1,764,593 Town Green budget.

On Monday, the city commission will also:

• Extend the ground water monitoring contract at the Walker Mountain Landfill and the Berryhill Landfill with Golder Associates Inc. The contract for 2007-2008 was $124,053.68. The new contract amount for 2009-2010 is $129,028. The Berryhill Landfill consists of 14 detection wells and seven assessment wells with six surface water samples. The Walker Mountain Landfill consists of 39 detection wells with 16 surface water samples.
• Consider a resolution to support an application for the 2009 Community HOME Investment Program Grant for $300,000. The grant money is used to assist senior homeowners with the rehabilitation of their homes.
• Consider approval of the 2009 Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program Award application. Major Elaine Snow with the Rome Police Department said the grant is for $237,406. If approved by the city, it will then go before the Floyd County Commission for approval before submission to the federal government. “It’s federal funding for law enforcement,” said Maj. Snow. If awarded, $105,357 would go to Floyd County for law enforcement, and the remainder of $132,049 would go to the city. “We use ours for equipment for our officers,” Maj. Snow said.
• Place on first reading a revision to the Unified Land Development Code (ULDC) concerning which homeowner projects would require building permits.
• Hold public hearings for rezoning requests at 19 West Ross Street, 700 Lee Avenue, 844 Turner McCall Boulevard and 2236 Redmond Circle and a special use permit request at 910 Desoto Avenue.
The Rome City Commission meets Monday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

WE DO NOT NEED A “GREEN” IN ROME. WE NEED JOBS, RAISES, AND AN UPGRADED EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM JUST TO NAME A FEW THINGS THAT SHOULD BE A PRIORITY. WHO GIVES A FLYING CRAP IF WE HAVE A “NICE PIECE OF GRASS” BETWEEN THE FORUM AND THE RIVER?? NO ONE!!!!! I AM SO SICK OF THE SPLOST BEING USED FOR THE LOCAL ” POLICTICO’S ” SPECIAL PET PROJECTS. FOCUS ON BOOSTING THE ECONOMY!!!! WHAT A WASTE.
