Mr. F. Don Hopper
Mr. F. Don Hopper, Sr., age 67, of 1147 Cobb Mountain Road, Cedartown, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Hopper was born in Otto, NC on February 7, 1942, son of the late Fred James Hopper and the late Bertha Norton Hopper. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a Division Manager for Aubrey Silvey Enterprises, Inc. in Carrollton following over 16 years of employment. Mr. Hopper was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, the former Karen Dowling, to whom he was married on March 18, 1961; 3 daughters, Mrs. Wendy Hopper Menze, and her husband, Jay, Juneau, Alaska, Mrs. Heidi Hopper Popham, and her husband, Kurt, Silver Creek, and Mrs. Holly Hopper Adams, and her husband, Jonathan, Conyers; 2 sons, Rusty Hopper, and his wife, Janet, Sugar Valley, and Gary Hopper, and his wife, Donna, Silver Creek; 10 grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 2pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Alan Fuller will officiate. Private interment will follow on Thursday in Rome Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.

Mr. Hubert Aubrey Rogers
Mr. Hubert Aubrey Rogers, age 82, of 6 Ferndell Drive, NE, Rome, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Rogers was born in Floyd County on November 16, 1926, son of the late Gus Franklin Rogers and the late Grace Claudene Henderson Rogers. He was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Rogers worked for the City of Rome Water Department for a number of years, and then after retirement, he worked at the West Rome Kroger for several years.
Survivors include his wife, the former Eudell Patterson Hice, to whom he was married on March 14, 1986; a son, Ronald Hice and his wife, Cindy, Rome; a daughter, Mrs. Annette Vann and her husband, Herbert, Acworth; 5 grandchildren, R. G. Hice, Rome, Earl Hice, Rome, Kim Brown, Mobile, Ala., Katie Vann, Acworth, and Angela Vann, Acworth; 2 great grandchildren, Ronald “Ju Ju” Brown and Maleea Houser; 3 brothers, Hoyt Gus Rogers, Atlanta, Charles Edward “Red” Rogers and his wife, Elizabeth, Rome, and Robert Dean “Bobby” Rogers and his wife, Mary, Lindale; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at 11am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Spears officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.

Mr. Gordon Lee Swanson
Mr. Gordon Lee Swanson, age 91, of 12 Chateau Drive, Rome, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2009, at a local healthcare facility.
Mr. Swanson was born in Walker County, Georgia on April 9, 1918, son of the late Robert Daris Swanson and the late Ida Lou Odom Swanson. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. Mr. Swanson was of the Pentecostal faith and worked for a number of years in the textile industry working at Anchor Rome, Pepperell Manufacturing and retiring from Diamond Shamrock Mills in 1981. He was part of the Georgia Mountain Band.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Nell Swanson, Rome; 3 daughters, Mrs. Kathy Whorton and her husband, Bob, Guntersville, Ala., Mrs. Vickie Lindsey and her husband, Lamar, Rome, and Ms. Deborah Swanson, Rome, formerly of Medina, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Polly Tiner, San Antonio, Tx.; 3 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Elgin Williams will officiate.

Mr. Louis Melvin Branton
Mr. Louis Melvin Branton, age 82, of 763 Youngs Mill Road, Kingston, formerly of 47 Preacher Smith Road, Silver Creek, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2009, at a local hospital.
Mr. Branton was born in Polk County, Georgia on May 4, 1927, son of the late Arthur Lee Branton and the late Carrie Belle Satcher Branton. He was a member of the McFall Baptist Church and attended the Liberty View Baptist Church. Mr. Branton was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force serving during World War II. Prior to retirement, he worked for a number of years as a foreman at Bekeart. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charlene Murphy Branton, by 4 sisters, Mrs. Thelma Turner, Mrs. Addie Moore, Mrs. Evelyn Bridges, and Mrs. Ethel Taylor, and by 3 brothers, Otis Branton, William Branton, and Eugene Branton.
Survivors include his wife, the former Willie Roe Collum, to whom he was married on November 8, 1952; 2 daughters, Mrs. Susan Diane Middleton and her husband, David, Kingston, and Mrs. Cindy Marie Kelley and her husband, Doug, Silver Creek; a son, Michael Louis Branton, Cave Spring; 4 grandsons, Matthew Middleton, Mark Middleton, Justin Evans, and Blake Smith; 1 great granddaughter, Miss Matalene Middleton; 2 brothers, Joseph Branton, Kingston, and Ralph Branton, Rome; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ronnie Lee Wheeler
Mr. Ronnie Lee Wheeler, age 43, 538 Shiflett Road, Silver Creek, passed away Friday morning, September 25, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Wheeler was born in Floyd County on November 29, 1965, son of Phyllis Youngblood Wheeler and the late Darrell Wheeler. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church and was a graduate of Berry College. Prior to retirement, he worked as an engineer for the Hon Company. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by a grandfather, Otha Youngblood, Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Debra “Dee Dee” Wheeler, to whom he was married in March of 2009; a daughter, Miss Amber Lee Wheeler, and her mother, Ms. Connie Jones Wheeler, Silver Creek; his mother, Ms. Phyllis Wheeler, Rome; a sister, Ms. Abby Wheeler Gowan, Rome; 2 grandmothers, Mrs. Jewel Youngblood, Rome, and Mrs. Gladys Dew Wheeler, Rome; 1uncle and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Philip May officiating. Interment will follow at East View Cemetery.

Miss Cesalie Elizabeth Henson
Miss Cesalie Elizabeth Henson, age 18, 606 Haywood Valley Road, Armuchee, passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 22, 2009 at a local medical center from injuries received in an automobile accident.
She was born in Floyd County, September 13, 1991, daughter of Chrystie Morris Henson and the late Eric Doyle Henson. She was a member of the Senior class at Armuchee High School, where she was active in several school activities. She was preceded in death by her father, Eric Doyle Henson, by her grandfather, USAF Retired MSgt. Lou Henson, and by her great grandmother, Vivian L. Brown.
Survivors include her mother, Ms. Chrystie Henson, Armuchee; grandparents, Carolyn Henson, Anniston, AL, Lynda & Daniel Bishop, Memphis, TN, and John L. and Pam Morris, Silver Creek; her great grandmother, Mrs. Sue Gass, Armuchee; her fiancé, Kyle Shanks, Armuchee; many other relatives also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 3pm at The Church at Northside. The Rev. Brad Prater will officiate.

Mr. Billy Gene Twilley
Mr. Billy Gene Twilley, age 75, 11280 Highway 411 North, Centre, AL, passed away Tuesday morning, September 22, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Twilley was born in Cherokee County, AL on January 4, 1934, son of the late Thomas Twilley and the late Lucille Morgan Twilley. He was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Thomas and Steve Twilley, and by a brother, Charles Twilley. Mr. Twilley was a self-employed carpenter but had been employed with Celanese in Rome and at Cave Spring Marine. He was a member of the New Nazareth Baptist Church in Forney, AL.
Survivors include his wife, the former Patsy Ann Owens, to whom he was married on August 16, 1969; 2 sons, Rod M. Twilley, and his wife, Amy, Spring Garden, AL, and Chad Twilley, and his wife, Torrie, Kingston; 5 grandchildren, Ammie Twilley, Rome, Autumn Twilley, Rome, Morgan Twilley, Spring Garden, AL, Caitlin Twilley, Kingston, and Isaac Twilley, Kingston; 2 great grandsons, Ephraim and Eathan Jones, Rome; nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Samuel Robert Eden
Mr. Samuel Robert Eden, age 85, 4488 Old Rockmart Road, Aragon, passed away Monday, September 21, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Eden was born in Lindale, GA on May 17, 1924, son of the late J. Harley Eden and the late Bessie Baker Eden. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald Eden, by a great granddaughter, Avery Eden Silver, by a sister, Sudie Morgan, by a brother, Harry Eden, and by 2 nephews, David and Roger Eden.
He attended the Pepperell School and began employment at the Lindale Mill at an early age, meeting his wife while working there. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Northern Apennines and Po Valley. In 1953, he with his wife moved to Flint, Michigan and was employed with Ford Motor Co. for a year, then moved to Miami, where he was employed as a machinist. While in Miami, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In 1959, they returned back to the Rome area where he assisted in starting production at B. E. Anderson. Shortly thereafter, they opened Eden’s Grocery in Seney, which they owned and operated until 1973. Mr. Eden served as Manager of the Floyd County Baptist Camp here in Rome for a number of years. Prior to his retirement, he served as Manager of Georgia WMU Camp Pinnacle in Clayton, GA for 12 years. He was also a school bus driver in Polk and Rabun Counties and with the C. P. Center here in Rome. Mr. Eden was a longtime member of the Pleasant Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Joshua Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Aragon Lodge F. & A. M., the Low 12 Club, and was a Gideon.
Survivors include his wife, the former Geraldine Mull, to whom he was married on November 1, 1941; 2 daughters, Mrs. Gail Eden Silver, and her husband, Mike, Aragon, and Ms. Kathy Eden, Rome; 5 grandsons, Robby Silver, and his wife, Trudy, Aragon, Rev. Justin Silver, and his wife, Mandy, Rome, Jonathan Silver, Rome, Seth Rains, and his wife, Kitty, Silver Creek, and Ryan Silver, Carrollton; 9 great grandchildren, Madeline, Abigail, and Mary Elizabeth Silver, Aragon, Samuel, Dillon, and Luke Silver, Rome, Austin, Caleb, and Albry Rains, Silver Creek; a sister, Mrs. Martha Hayes, Rome; several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 11am at the Pleasant Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Bagley, the Rev. Wes Ellis and his pastor, Dr. Mike Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hope Cemetery with the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard extending full military honors.

Ms. Karen Lee House Smith, age 48, of Rome, passed away Tuesday morning, September 22, 2009, in a local hospital.
Ms. Smith was born in Floyd County on October 14, 1960, daughter of the late Charles Robert House and the late Dorothy Drummond House. She was a graduate of East Rome High School. Ms. Smith was a licensed cosmetologist and prior to her illness, was employed with Hair Fifth Avenue. She was a member of the Garden Lakes Baptist Church but had attended the Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church. Ms. Smith was also employed by the Floyd County School Board as a bus driver in the Armuchee school district.
Survivors include her daughter, Miss Macie Smith, Rome; her son, Brett Smith, Rome; a brother, Lance House, and his wife, Patty, Cleveland, TN; the father of her children, Wendell Smith, Rome; nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 11am at the Garden Lakes Baptist Church with the Dr. Richard Kremer and the Rev. Mac McCurry officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Clois Norman Alexander
Mr. Clois Norman Alexander, age 91, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2009.
Mr. Alexander was born in Madison County, Tennessee on May 16, 1918, the son of the late Charlie Norman and Sattie Duke Alexander. Mr. Alexander was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Jackson, Tennessee and of the AGOGA Sunday School Class. He retired while living in Perry, Florida where he worked for Proctor and Gamble Buckeye.
Mr. Alexander was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Opal McAlexander Alexander on October 27, 2005, by a sister, LaVerne Alexander Mills and by his parents.
Survivors include his sister, Ozell Alexander Towater, of Milan, Tennessee; brother, David Lamar Alexander, of St. Peters, Missouri; children, Brenda Odom (Harry) of Rome, Georgia, Judy Freeman (James) of Montgomery, Texas, Rhonda Alexander of Mooresville, North Carolina and Floyd Alexander (Misha) of Birmingham, Alabama; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Willie Mae Storey Fisher
Mrs. Willie Mae Storey Fisher, age 68, 151 Everett Springs Road, Calhoun, passed away Monday morning, September 21, 2009 at her residence.
Mrs. Fisher was born in Floyd County, April 25, 1941, daughter of the late John Davis Story and the late Pearlie Mae Highfield Story. She was a homemaker and attended the North Rome Church of God. She was a member and a Past President of the American Legion Post # 5 Ladies Auxiliary, a member and Past President of the VFW Post #4911 Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the 40 & 8 Ladies Auxiliary, a member of T.O.P.S., and a member of the Etowah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was married to the late Donald R. Fisher, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1991.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Fisher McMorrow, and her husband, Stephen, Rosedale; a son, Donald R. Fisher, Jr., and his wife, Debbie, Rome; 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Rebecca Storey Vinson, Jackson, TN, Watha Storey Barton, Rome, and Debbie Storey Ashley, Silver Creek; 2 brothers, Danny F. Story, Rome, and Phil S. Storey, Rome; nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Michael Thornton Page
Mr. Michael Thornton Page, age 61, of Rome, passed away Saturday evening, September 19, 2009 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Page was born in Anderson, SC on August 9, 1948, son of the late Eleanor Thornton Page and the late James William Page. Mr. Page was employed with Milliken & Company in various management positions from 1977 until his retirement in 2005. His work in the textile industry included roles with the Carpet and Rug Institute, the Home Furnishings Council, and the Hotel & Motel Association. Prior to his death, he was affiliated with Riddle & Page Office Products in Rome.
Mr. Page was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rome. He graduated from Darlington School, Davidson College, and The Citadel. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Page was a member of the Rome Rotary Club and served as Chairman of the Darlington School Board of Visitors. He also served on the Ben Franklin Academy Board of Advisors and was past Chairman of the Board of Trustees for LaGrange Academy. He also served as Chairman of the Board for the United Way of Floyd County and the Rome Area History Museum. In addition, he was a House Parent for both the Methodist Children’s Home and Thornwell Home for Children. Other memberships include the Cum Laude Society, Kappa Alpha Order, the Dan Hanks Heritage Society for Darlington School, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the League of the South, and the Georgia Tech Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Agnes Shaughnessy Page; 2 sons, Wade Hampton (Bo) Page, and his wife, Heather, and Davis Alexander Page.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5 until 8pm.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 6pm in the Morris Chapel on the campus of Darlington School. His pastor, the Rev. Jeff Chadwick will officiate. A reception will immediately follow the memorial service in the Dodd Dining Hall at Darlington School.
On Friday, September 25, 2009, a memorial service will be held at 11am at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church in Hartwell, GA. Dr. Allen Stewart will officiate. Following the service, his remains will be interred in the Northview Cemetery in Hartwell.

Mr. Kenneth Donald Smith, Sr., age 68, 40 Conn Street, Rome, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2009, in a local hospital.
Mr. Smith was born in Lansing, Michigan on January 14, 1941, son of the late Kenneth and Charlene Styers Smith. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sue Rockwood. Prior to his retirement, he was a Sergeant with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, having been employed there for several years. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Smith was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, the former Margaret Louise Helms, to whom he was married on October 5, 1987; 2 sons, Kenneth Donald Smith, Jr., Paducah, KY, and Gary Lynn Smith, Salem, KY; 4 step-daughters, Lynn, Elaine, Sandra and Vicky; 3 step-sons, Eric, Randy, and Jeffery; a sister, Mrs. Beverly Cook, Paducah, KY; 3 brothers, Wayne, Gerald, and John Smith, all of Paducah, KY; 2 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2pm at the graveside in Rome Memorial Park. The Rev. Gary Studdard will officiate with the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard extending funeral military honors.
There will be no formal visitation. The family may be contacted at the residence.

He was born in Floyd County, December 6, 1946, son of the former Roxie Mae Yarbrough and the late A.L. Tidwell. He was a retired Brick Mason and was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include 2 sons, Billy Joe Tidwell, Jr. and Jody Tidwell, both of Cedartown; his mother, Mrs. Roxie Mae Yarbrough Tidwell, Rome; 2 sisters Shirley Huether, and her husband, Edgar, Lindale, and Jo Ann Newberry, Rome; 5 brothers, Bobby Tidwell, and his wife Shirley, Silver Creek, Charles Tidwell, Lindale, Terry Lee Tidwell, and his wife, Sherry, Key West, FL, Jackie Rogers, and his wife, Brenda, Lindale, and James Rogers, Rome; 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also.

Mrs. Emily Barbara Whitley O’Neal
Mrs. Emily Barbara Whitley O’Neal, age 75, 13 Seay Drive, Rome, passed away Friday, September 18, 2009 at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome.
Mrs. O’Neal was born in Taylor County, GA on September 12, 1934, daughter of the late Leonard Eugene Whitley and the late Katie Mae Brown Whitley. She was married to William Edward O’Neal, who preceded her in death on May 22, 2009. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. O’Neal was employed for 21 years with the United States Postal Service. She and her husband moved to Rome from Albany, Georgia in 1994 and were members of the Hill Crest Baptist Church.
Survivors include 3 sons, Michael David O’Neal, and his wife, Jane, Albany, Philip Gregory O’Neal, and his wife, Pawnee, Hiram, and William Christopher O’Neal, and his wife, Karen, Euharlee; 2 brothers, Donald Scott Whitley, and his wife, Suzanne, Phenix City, AL, and Richard Jeffery Whitley, Westville, FL; 2 sisters, Angela Mae Whitley Benefield, and her husband, Bobby, Fortson, and Martha Judan Whitley Kuykendall, and her husband, Lee, Van Buren, AR; 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Fred Gerald Masingill, age 72, of 9 Margo Trail, Rome, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Masingill was born in Floyd County on July 15, 1937, son of the late Fred O. Masingill and the late Sallie Amerson Masingill. He was a graduate of Pepperell High School. Mr. Masingill was a member of the Desoto Park Baptist Church and had been attending the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Prior to retirement, he worked for Atlanta Gas Light for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife, the former Elizabeth Kellett, to whom he was married in October, 1957; a daughter, Chris Birdsong and her husband, Jimmy, Rome; 2 sons, David Masingill and his wife, Pam, Marietta, and Mike Masingill and his wife, Lou, Eatonton; 8 grandchildren, Claire Masingill, William Birdsong, Morgan Birdsong, Sydney Masingill, Kearstin, Vannah, Asher, and Preslea Masingill; a brother, Jimmy Masingill, Rome; a brother-in-law, Jack Kellett and his wife, Virginia, Rome; nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ray James Tate
Mr. Ray James Tate, Sr., age 81, 1625 Spout Springs Road, SW, Cave Spring, GA, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 17, 2009, in a local hospital.
Mr. Tate was born in Willacoochee, GA on May 5, 1928, son of the late John Herbert (Hub) Tate and the late Stella Mae Wimpy Tate. He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Carlton Tate, F. W. Tate, and Clinton Tate.
Mr. Tate was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served during the Korean War. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Agronomy, Mr. Tate was employed as a Soil Scientist with the United States Department of Agriculture for over 32 years. He was also self-employed for over 17 years as a Soil Consultant in Floyd County and the surrounding areas. He was a member and Deacon of the Live Oak Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of Deacons for several terms. A long-time cattle farmer, Mr. Tate was a member of the Floyd Cattlemen’s Association.
Survivors include his wife, the former Lilla Lou Booth, to whom he was married on August 9, 1953; 3 daughters, Mrs. LaRae Tate Martin, and her husband, William, Cave Spring, Mrs. Bonnie Tate Goff, and her husband, Billy Ray, Jr., Greenwood, SC, and Mrs. Freida Tate Brooks, and her husband, Loudon, Greenwood, SC; a son, Ray James (Jimmy) Tate, Jr., and his wife, Selena, Cave Spring; 10 grandchildren, Drew Martin, and his fiancé, Valerie Wilson, Centre, AL, Blake Martin, and his wife, Anna, Centre, AL, Trae Martin, Decatur, AL, Billy Ray (Tripp) Goff, III, and his wife, Janet, Greenwood, SC, Deleigh Goff Crawford, and her husband, Preston, Greenwood, SC, Loudon Brooks, IV, Charleston, SC, Dylan Eubanks, Cave Spring, Alyssa Eubanks, Cave Spring, Dawson Ray Tate, Cave Spring, and Landon Tate, Cave Spring; 7 great grandchildren, Eli and Ava Martin, Centre, AL, Tanner, Casen, and Sumher Goff, Greenwood, SC, and Gabriel and Kalani Crawford, Greenwood, SC; 2 sisters, Mrs. Thelma Tow, Dahlonega, and Edith Higgins, Dahlonega; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Carrie E. Hobbs, 73, of Cartersville died Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at her residence. Born June 30, 1936, in Batesville, Mississippi she was the daughter of the late Edward Newton and the late Katie Wise Newton. She was also preceded in death by her husband Ralph Hobbs; daughter, Theresa Kuykendall; and two great-grandchildren, Victoria Bethune, and Austin Guest.
Survivors include her daughters and their spouses, Brenda and Miguel Aguirre of Winder, Tjuana and Larry Adams of Jackson, and Connie and Bobby Ellis of Kingston; son, Ralph Hobbs of Marietta; brother, James Newton of Lawrenceville; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2009 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with the Rev. Mike Franklin officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Phillips, Russell Guest, Christopher Ellis, Daniel Bethune, Eloy Berumen and Ralph Hobbs. These gentlemen are asked to be at the funeral home by 10:15 a.m. on Friday.

Mr. Mather Marvin Rickman
Mr. Mather Marvin Rickman, Sr. age 81, of Rome, GA died Tuesday, September 15, 2009 in a Rome hospital.
Mr. Rickman was born in Floyd County, GA on January 15, 1928, the son of the late Joseph W. Rickman, Sr. and Ollie Glenn Dempsey Rickman. Mather was a Naval Seaman in World War II serving his country aboard the USS Missouri. He enjoyed traveling with his family, fishing with friends and playing cards and computer games. Mather was a self employed man of many talents having owned an auto parts shop. He was a member of the Methodist church. In addition to his parents Mr. Rickman was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill, Roy and Fred Rickman and sisters, Barbara Lloyd, Helen Griffin and Bettye Poesel.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years Louise Jackson Rickman; daughter and son-in-law, Betty R. and Wayne Morgan; son and daughter-in-law, Mather M. Jr. and Diane Rickman; granddaughters, Kelley Fickas and Jessica Capossela; great-grandson, Jackson Fickas and a great-grandson due in December. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends and family at the home of their “extra” daughter, Sandra Davis, 23 Bluff Mountain Drive, Rome, GA 30165 on Thursday, September 17, 2009 beginning at 5:00 P.M.

Mrs. Frances Dempsey
Mrs. Frances Dempsey, age 92, of Rome, GA, went to heaven on September 14, 2009.
Mrs. Dempsey was born in Chattanooga, TN on December 30, 1916, the daughter of the late Denny Carroll Broome and Cordelia Brooks Broome. Mrs. Dempsey was a member of the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents Mrs. Dempsey was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Dwyatt Dempsey to whom she was married in 1934; by a son-in-law, W. Robert Turner and a brother, Philip B. Broome.
Survivors include her daughter, Charlene D. Turner of Kingwood, TX; her son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Jean Dempsey of Rome; grandchildren and their spouses, Russ and Teri Propes of Cypress, TX, Bill and Lori Turner of Rome, Ron and Amanda Dempsey of Euharlee, GA and Clift and Melanie Dempsey of Cartersville, GA and twelve great-grandchildren also survive.
Graveside and interment services will be held Thursday, September 17, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Dr. Ron Dempsey officiating.

Mrs. Privett was born in Floyd County, October 14, 1937, daughter of the late John C. Yarbrough and the late Mary Dean Jenkins Yarbrough. For several years, she was employed with Winthrop Manor Nursing Home in the housekeeping department. She was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Eleanor Barnette Hoyt
Mrs. Eleanor Barnette Hoyt, age 88, 603 W. 1st Street, Rome, passed away Saturday morning, September 12, 2009 in a local health care facility.
Mrs. Hoyt was born in Sayreton, AL on July 6, 1921, daughter of the late George Washington Barnette, Sr. and the late Safronia Smith Barnette. She was married to Wade Cothran Hoyt, Jr. on September 7, 1944, and he preceded her in death on February 14, 1997. She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Lucille Edmison, Alma Wiggins, and Martha McAfee, and by a brother, George Washington Barnette, Jr.
Affectionately known by her family as Granmom and Yadi, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and baking her famous pound cakes and banana bread.
Mrs. Hoyt was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Birmingham, AL and attended Shorter College here in Rome. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Grace Bible Study, the Townview Garden Club and Coosa Country Club. She was a Sustaining member of the Rome Junior Service League.
During her life, she touched many lives and many hearts. She will be greatly missed by her family but they rejoice in the legacy of her Faith in God and in the blessings she gave them.
Mrs. Hoyt is survived by her 4 children, Wade Cothran Hoyt, III, and his wife, Gayle, Nathan Barnette Hoyt, Sr., and his wife, Beth, and Mrs. Elizabeth Cothran Hoyt Paulson, and her husband, Greg, all of Rome, and Robert Clemmons Hoyt, Sr., and his wife, Debra, Memphis, TN; 12 grandchildren, Wade C. Hoyt, IV, and his wife, Alison, Leslie Pearson, and her husband, Jack, Martha Curlee, and her husband, Charles, Nathan Hoyt, Jr., and his wife, Shanah, Anna C Hoyt, David C. Hoyt, and his wife, Heather, Matthew Jones, and his wife, Jill, Keely Amos, and her husband, Justin, Julie Jones, Amy Robertson, and her husband, Daniel, Lauren Cline, and her husband, Joel, and Robert C. Hoyt, Jr.; 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Ms. Ethelyn Burnette, Calera, AL; nieces and nephews also survive.
A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church in Rome. The Rev. Scott Jackson will officiate.
Immediately following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the King Hall at First Presbyterian Church. At other hours, they family may be contacted at the residence of a son, Nat Hoyt, 10 Coventry Road, Rome.
Private interment services will be held on Wednesday in Myrtle Hill Cemetery, prior to the memorial service.

Mrs. Elizabeth Allen Brown
Mrs. Elizabeth Allen Brown, born February 12, 1920 in College Park, GA to Samuel T. and Bess Heath Allen, died peacefully at her home on Friday evening, September 11, 2009.
Mrs. Brown was a positive and creative teacher, insurance agent, master gardener, bridge player, and friend, but most of all a loving wife and mother. She was married 47 years to Frank A. (Jack) Brown of Cooper, Brown, and Currie, who preceded her in death on January 2, 1995. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rome.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her son, Frank A. Brown, Jr., and his wife, Carol; by her daughter, Dr. Eloise Brown Carter; by her grandchildren, Dr. Laurie Brown Jones, and her husband, Dr. Brad Jones, Chip Brown, and his wife, Lindsay, Stefanie Carter, and Cyndi Carter; her great granddaughter, Caroline Jones; her sisters, Mrs. Lucille Bowles and Mrs. Mary Cozzani; her brother, Jesse Allen; many nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Stephen Keith Prather, age 61, of 90 Mulligan Court, Shannon, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Prather was born in Randolph County, Alabama on June 18, 1948, son of Willie Belle Allen Whiteside and the late Willie Grover Prather. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War. Mr. Prather was a member of the American Legion Post #5 and was an avid deer hunter. He was of the Christian faith. Mr. Prather worked for Sara Lee Bakery for almost 30 years. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Lynn Ingram.

Mr. Alvin William Baker, age 87, of 10 Highway 411 East, Rome, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at a local health care facility.
Mr. Baker was born in Floyd County on January 4, 1922, son of the late Allen J. Baker and the late Ollie Ensley Baker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, the former Marguerite “Peg” Giles, on July 5, 1999, by a brother, James Clyde Baker, and by a sister, Mrs. Fay Nell Jones. Mr. Baker was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church, American Legion Post #136, V. F. W. #4911, and D. A. V. #24. Prior to retirement, he worked for 12 years for Coca Cola Bottling Company.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at 3:30pm at Floyd Memory Gardens with the Rev. Bobby Stephens officiating. The American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard will present military honors.

Mrs. Annie Lou Chastain Robbins
Mrs. Annie Lou Chastain Robbins, age 71, of 1691 Livingston Road, Rome, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at a local hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Robbins was born in Floyd County on November 28, 1937, daughter of the late Hubert Chastain and the late Sallie Cantrell Chastain. She was also preceded in death by a son, Stevie John Robbins. Prior to retirement, Mrs. Robbins worked in the lunchroom at McHenry School for several years. She loved working with flowers and feeding hummingbirds. Mrs. Robbins was a member of the Eden Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, John L. Robbins; a daughter, Mrs. Patty Kinard, Rome; a son, William Scott Robbins, Rome; a sister, Mrs. Lucille Kinard Ingram; a brother, Edward Chastain, Rome; 4 grandchildren, Jamie Kinard, Mrs. April Kinard Peeler, Steven Robbins and Greg Robbins; 4 great grandchildren, Candice Peeler, Elizabeth Kinard, Ethan Kinard, and Jeremiah Robbins; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 2pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Cargle officiating. Interment will follow at Rome Memorial Park.

Little Mason Anthony Brand
Little Mason Anthony Brand, age 2 months, of 235 Cave Spring Street, Rome, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at a local hospital.
Mason was born in Floyd County on July 2, 2009, son of Cody Ray Brand and Tricia Nicole Willett.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by 2 brothers, Jordan and Cameron Brand; a sister, Haidyn Brand; grandparents, Edward Ray Brand, Connie Dean, and Teresa Brand; great grandmother, Evelyn Martin; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 11, 2009, at 12 noon in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rome Memorial Park.

Danny Edward Crane
Danny Edward Crane, age 52, of 3805 Morton Bend Rd., died Wednesday afternoon in a Rome hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Parnick Jennings, Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home.
Thurman Waits
Thurman Donald Waits, age 60, of 219 Harrison Rd., Garden Lakes, Rome, a well-known retired educator, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning while vacationing in Gatlinburg.
He was born in Rome, Dec.26, 1948, a son of the late Doyce Jackson Waits and Thelma Foy Baker Waits. Thurman graduated from Cave Spring High School, Berry College, received his Masters and ED Specialist Degree from West Georgia College.
Throughout his educational career, he was loved and respected by students and faculty alike. He began teaching at Georgia School for the Deaf, then became Assistant Principal at Garden Lakes Elementary, Principal of Pepperell Middle School, Assistant Supt. of the Bartow County School System, Principal of Byron, GA. Middle School, Special Education teacher at Mansfield Elementary School, Principal of Chattanooga High School, retiring as Special Education teacher at Haralson County High School. Thurman was a member of the Georgia Educators Association,
Past President of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders, member of the National Association of Educational Leaders and active in sports as a high school softball umpire and basketball referee. He was a member of the Garden Lakes Baptist Church, Lindale Lodge # 455 F & AM and Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion.
Thurman also was involved in police work, serving as a member of the Floyd County Police Department and a Sgt. on the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Dept. He served during the Vietnam War in the US Army Special Forces in Germany. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Scott Waits and Robert Waits.
Surviving is his widow, the former Lynda Thompson, to whom he was married, Aug.16,1970; two daughters, Amy Michelle Waits, Rome and Abby Waits(Nathan) Green, White, GA.; granddaughter, Claire Elisabeth Green, White; three sisters, Glenda (Alvin) Couey, Rome, Doris Brock, Rome and Sharon(Carl Joe) Gilmore, Cave Spring; twin brother, Sherman Ronald (Emerye) Waits, Rome; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bonne Thompson Cauthen and Dr.Larry Cauthen,Rome; sister-in-law, Sandra(Ken)Thornton, Cartersville; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday in the Chapel of Parnick Jennings, Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Dr. Floyd Roebuck officiating. Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with t he Honor Guard of Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion rendering full military rites.

Jimmy Lee Holder
Jimmy Lee Holder, age 65, died at his residence, 719 Hutto Rd., Cedartown, Monday night.
He was born in Floyd County, July 25, 1944, a son of the late John William Holder and Sue Tolbert Holder. For the past 11 years, he had been employed by Home Depot in the Garden Shop. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Holder was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the Third Army at KU-Chi where he was wounded in action, receiving the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Post 86 in Cedartown.
Surviving is one son, James Lee (Leah) Holder, Armuchee; Fiancée, Cynthia Dotson, Cedartown; three brothers, Ray (Nancy) Holder, Calhoun, Bill (Linda) Holder, Rome and Jerry Holder, Denton, Texas; two sisters, Linda Tucker, Cedartown and Gail (Larry) Padgett, Lindale; grandchildren, Trevon, Cade, Lani and Bryson Holder; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, David Smith.
Graveside and interment services will be held at 11 am Thursday at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Rev. Greg Bridges officiating. Full graveside military rites will be rendered by the Honor Guard of Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:30 am Thursday and include, Wayne Padgett, David Smith, Hunter Smith, Trevon Holder, Regan Holder and Mackey Moates.

Mrs. Helen Ruth Eaves Harris, age 82, of 106 Crescent Ave., Rome, died Sunday afternoon in a Rome hospital.
She was born in Cherokee Co. AL, August 21, 1927, daughter of the late Rev. Joe Eaves and Bessie Lindsey Eaves. Prior to retirement, she was a home seamstress for Fashion Cleaners.
Mrs. Harris was a member of Eden Valley Baptist Church, which her late father founded and pastored. She was preceded in death by a brother, J.L. Eaves.
Surviving is her husband, Gene Harris, Rome; several nieces and nephews including special nieces Teresa Hunt, Lindale, Lura Brown, Pensacola, FL., Joyce Johnston, Lindale; special nephews, Bob Eaves, Tom Eaves and Ray Eaves of Michigan.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday in the Chapel of Parnick Jennings, Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Parnick Jennings, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Floyd Memory Gardens.

Margaret Sue Conaway Baker, age 63, died Sunday night at her residence, 4940 Hidden Point Drive, Cedar Bluff, AL. She retired from Floyd Medical Center in the Dietary Department.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday from the Chapel of Parnick Jennings, Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Rev. Harry Carter and Rev. Horace Humphries officiating. Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
