Blood Assurance to Ship Blood To Haiti Next Week
On Friday, Feb. 5, Blood Assurance President and CEO Rick Youngblood approved a shipment of blood products from the regional blood center to Haiti to assist with disaster relief.
Blood Assurance is contributing to a national effort to provide blood and blood products to support patients in Haiti.
Working in coordination with the AABB (international organization formerly known as the American Association of Blook Banks) Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism, shipments of blood from Blood Assurance to Haiti will begin on Monday, Feb. 8.
“Since we are part of a network of regional blood centers providing blood to Haiti, we do not feel this will deplete our local blood supply in any way,” said Linda Hisey, vice-president of marketing and communications for Blood Assurance.
The first shipment contains 25 units of blood, which have already been designated for shipment.
After the first shipment, Blood Assurance could be called upon again to provide additional blood products.
“We know that it’s the right thing to do, and we want to remind everyone that circumstances such as these are the reason we stress the importance of giving blood and giving often,” said Hisey.
